Toyota Stellenbosch Woordfees 2024 introduces new jazz venue and concert series “Jazz at the Konserve”
The vibrant rhythms of Cape jazz and the rich heritage of South African jazz will take centre-stage at the new “Jazz at the Konserve” concert series, set to be hosted at the stunning outdoor SU Konservatorium Amphitheatre during the 2024 Woordfees. This exciting new jazz venue will showcase award-winning talents from 2 to 4 October 2024, celebrating both established icons and emerging stars in South African jazz.

A stellar line-up of award-winning talent
Headlining this year’s concert series are some of the brightest names in jazz. The Ramon Alexander Trio will kick off the performances on October 2, bringing their signature Cape jazz style to life. Ramon Alexander, a renowned pianist and composer, has performed at prestigious festivals worldwide, and his ensemble’s energy promises to set the tone for the series.
Featuring popular singer Nic Miso.
The next evening, the Katemba Quartet will take the stage. This ensemble brings together the formidable talents of Schalk Joubert, Muneeb Hermans, Blake Hellaby, and Pascal Haas. Their fusion of vibrant Cape jazz with international influences creates a powerful and fresh soundscape, guaranteed to captivate the audience.
On October 4, don’t miss the Sun Quintet, an exciting young group (all students and alumni of the SU Department of Music’s Jazz Division under mentorship of Ramon Alexander), that has taken the South African jazz scene by storm. Having recently won "Best jazz album" and "Best jazz song" at the 2024 Mzansi Jazz Awards in Soweto, the Sun Quintet is quickly becoming a household name. Pianist Melisizwe Plaatjie and drummer Stuart Martin, both members of the National Youth Jazz Band in Makhanda in 2023 and 2024 respectively, are joined by saxophonist Sibonelo Kodisang, trombonist Aubrey Matsila, and bassist Chadleigh Growar to create an unforgettable jazz experience. Their debut album Embrace the Path has been hailed as a testament to their passion and authenticity, blending diverse musical backgrounds into a cohesive, soulful sound.
An immersive jazz experience
Adding to the excitement, the Maties Jazz Society will open each evening’s concert, offering a platform for the music students of Stellenbosch University to shine. After each performance, the audience is invited to join in a jam session with the artists – bring your instrument and play alongside South Africa’s jazz elite in an unforgettable post-concert experience.

Jazz at the Konserve promises an immersive celebration of jazz at the 2024 Woordfees. With its new outdoor setting and stellar artist lineup, it is set to become a highlight of the festival.
