Die bekroonde toneelstuk In Slavenhuis 39, wat handel oor vier bruin eerstejaarstudente wat ’n woonstel in Stellenbosch deel wat jare gelede slawe gehuisves het, is weer vanjaar by die Woordfees te sien.
In Slavenhuis 39 het verlede jaar by die Toyota US Woordfees in Stellenbosch gedebuteer, waar dit die Woordtrofee vir beste opkomende kunstenaars ontvang het.
Herschelle Benjamin het die teks geskryf en Philip Rademeyer behartig die regie. Die opkomende akteurs in die produksie is Stephren Saayman, Eldon van der Merwe, Stefan Erasmus en Cantona James.
In Slavenhuis 39 is onlangs benoem vir beste nuutgeskepte Afrikaanse teks by die Fiësta-toekennings.

In Slavenhuis 39 het verlede jaar by die Woordfees debuteer en sedertdien oral opgang gemaak. Vanjaar kan die stuk weer by die Woordfees gesien word. Het julle ooit gedink die stuk gaan so suksesvol wees?
When Herschelle explained the play to me and the cast in 2017 I saw so much potential in it. When it was announced that it will perform at Woordfees in 2019 I instantly knew it would be taken to other heights, having Philip’s great mind and heart on the project. So to answer the question: Yes, I always had great belief in the production and team.

Nathan, is an actuarial science student at Stellenbosch university. He is a product of gang and rape violence; fathered by the most notorious gangster on the Cape Flats. He was raised by his adoptive parents to be a fine young man; however, his true bloodline runs strong and he battles with his true identity as well as his identity as a coloured boy at the university of Stellenbosch.

Julle klomp wat saam werk aan In Slavenhuis 39 kom nou al ’n lang pad saam. Wat is van die hoogtepunte van die proses om die stuk op die verhoog te bring?
The highlight of being in this production I would say was every rehearsal. To see different artists come together and create with only our bodies and minds. The fact that we had to create a story with physical theatre that fills the gaps in communication in the play has been the highlight of this journey for me.
Jy is ook tans te sien in die televisiereeks Arendsvlei. Vertel asseblief meer hiroor. Watter karakter vertolk jy?
I portray the character Daniel Lefras, a homeless boy that struggles day to day to keep his living arrangements a secret as well as survive the cruel streets. He is paired with another homeless woman played by Quanita Adams. The two create a mother and son bond that keeps them warm in the cold pipe where they lay their heads at night.

Hoe sal jy sê verskil toneelspel vir die verhoog van toneelspel vir die televisie?
Theatre has always been my first love, for the simple fact of the connection one builds with the audience members. However, being a method actor I find television to be a great learning opportunity to grow my skills as an actor. My main aim in television is to create the same feeling as I would in theatre.
Wat sou jy sê is sommige van die uitdagings van akteur wees in vandag se tyd wat jy in die gesig staar?
The fact that you always have to worry about whether the next project will come in time before the rent is due. Chasing this dream one needs to be willing to make so many sacrifices in order to grow and glow in your craft.

Cantona, jy is onlangs vir ’n Fiësta-toekenning benoem vir beste opkomende kunstenaar. Wat beteken die benoeming vir jou?
This is everything I’d hoped for. Growing up I was taught to be the best at what I do. However, the older I got the more I realised I just needed to be my best self. This nomination has the same effect as a win would have. Just to be recognised as one of the upcoming artists worthy of a nomination among so many others gives more energy to keep chasing the dream.

Wat hou die toekoms vir jou in?
The future holds what God and casting agents deem it to be. However, my end goal is to reach the Hollywood screens – a goal that doesn’t scare you isn’t a goal worth having. For now I will be giving my all on Arendsvlei, and hope to only grow as an actor in the show.
